The Birth of the Impressionists

  • Pennard House Shepton Mallet, England, BA4 6TP United Kingdom (map)

Join us for a relaxing residential stay in the stunning setting of Pennard House for a fascinating course, some delicious locally-sourced food and a truly home-from-home atmosphere. Our tutor, art historian Dr Jan Cox, will be taking you on a journey through the birth of arguably the most influential artistic movement of them all - The Impressionists.

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the First Impressionist exhibition of 1874. During this course Jan will be exploring whether Impressionism was revolutionary or evolutionary. Beginning with the colour of Delacroix and the line of Ingres, you will look at the artists who contributed to the birth of Impressionism: The Barbizon School, Millet, Corot, Daubigny, Boudin and Jongkind all contributed. Then finally you’ll take a look at Impressionists such as Monet, Morisot, Cézanne and Degas who all contributed to the first exhibition in 1874. Together you will discover exactly how a movement like this was really born.

The course runs from dinner on the first day (29th April) until lunch on the last day (1st May)
