Images of Majesty: Selected Royal Portraits from Henry VIII to Charles III

  • Pennard House Shepton Mallet, England, BA4 6TP United Kingdom (map)

Join us in the stunning surroundings of Pennard House for a delicious 2-course lunch prepared using the very best local, seasonal ingredients. After lunch, we’ll be joined by art historian Richard Kay for a lecture about arguably some of the most iconic portraits of their time - Those of royal figures…

The monarchs of the United Kingdom have been depicted by artists for hundreds of years, each painter seeking to capture the vital element of the sitter that will define his or her reign. In this talk, spanning 500 years of such portraits, Richard Kay assesses how well the uniquely different personalities of some of our monarchs come across when scrutinized by the artists’ gazes, some of which flatter the regal sitter, some of which seem to insult the Crown itself.

This lecture is suitable for all.
