The Age of Discovery - The Early Navigators

  • Pennard House Shepton Mallet, England, BA4 6TP United Kingdom (map)

This fascinating day course is the first of a series of standalone courses with historian Mike Shaw which consider how the incredible European navigators discovered the world.

The Ottoman conquest of the Levant cut Europe off from access to the Silk Route and spurred exploration of alternative routes to the Indies. During the course we will tell the story of Portuguese and latterly Spanish exploration of the Atlantic seaboards in search of access to the Indian Ocean and how this process, coupled with enhancements in ship design and new scientific understanding, heralded the beginning of our Modern Age.

Our home for the day will be the stunning surroundings of Pennard House, a Grade II listed manor house nestled in the idyllic Somerset countryside. The friendly team at Pennard will ensure you are well looked after throughout your visit with a beautiful 2-course lunch and refreshments, not to mention a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere.
